Frida for a Day!

March is National and International Women’s Month. In this month, I thought we could live a day in the life of Frida. Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist born in 1907. Her path to artistry was born out of a debilitating illness when she was 6 and a bus accident when she was 18. The bus accident left her paralyzed and while in the wheelchair, she learned to put her pain onto canvas. Her paintings are palpably raw and full of emotion.

Frida Kahlo has also become a pinnacle role model for feminism and the LGTBQI because the rawness in her work demonstrates the female experience, body positivity and openness about her sexuality.

I thought it would be really great to honor her and many other women of years past. Their trailblazing created paths and options for us today. I, for one am glad that I can make choices that open up my personal pathways.

In the past 13 years alone, I have been and continue to be a mom, a wife, a teacher, adjunct professor, assistant principal, property manager, business owner, administrative manager, officiant, notary signing agent and who knows what other titles are in my future!

Some fun and creative ways to support our trailblazing women of the past:

1) paint your pain or joy onto canvas

2) learn more about feminism and/or LGBTQI by listening to a podcast, watching a movie, reading a book

3) write positive affirmations to the women in your life including YOURSELF

4) support women owned ventures profit/nonprofit

5) get more involved politically and take action like taking a pledge to end violence against women
